CHOICES© For Learning Different Children

A Direct Teaching Social Skills Program

Be part of an innovative direct teaching social skills program for children with learning differences.  This program was developed by the Shelton School in Dallas, Texas and is used to assist children with acquiring tools to effectively interact with peers and interpret non-verbal communication cues. Some of the goals of the program include:

■Improved ability to create and maintain healthy peer relationships

■Develop effective problem solving techniques

■Create more positive interactions at school

■Improved interpersonal communication skills

■Improved ability to effectively communicate needs

■Reduced negative behaviour interactions

■Improved self-confidence

This program incorporates drama, art and role play to help children understand the core components of the program. The core components include: communication, problem solving and friendship building.

We will also be incorporating some of the key lessons from the "Knowing Yourself, Knowing Others" workbook by Barbara Cooper and Nancy Widdows. This workbook is used in the SuperKids social skills program in Ridgefield, Connecticut.

Sessions will be available for CHOICES for Beginners (4 and 5 year olds). Classes are for 6 weeks and each session is one hour. The focus of CHOICES for Beginners is helping young children with emotional regulation, communication (verbal/non-verbal), play skills and making connections.

Sessions for CHOICES 1 will also be availble for students 6-8years of age. CHOICES 1 runs for 6 weeks and each session is 1 hour.

All sessions will be held at Oak Park Moms and Tots - 2530 Sixth Line Unit #9 Oakville , Ontario.
