Through interactive activities, group discussion, worksheets and other creative tools, girls will be able to share knowledge and experiences, support each other and learn how to cope with the stresses and pressures in a girls world. The programs are intended to provide opportunities for children to develop the necessary skills to be successful at school in a supportive and inclusive environment. The program elements will include: literacy, numeracy, science and the development of social skills. charlene.abrahams@sympatico.caImportant Tid Bits About the Centre
Book Nook
Don't forget that there are plenty of children's and parenting books in the back for you to sign out and take home.
The Oakville Public Library sponsored setting up the library for us and Sue Dougherty from the library who runs a program for us at the centre every three weeks rotates some of the books.
Snack and Tidy Alert
We are having a lot more children eat snack at the centre. If at all possible please have your children eat breakfast before they come to the programs so they do not require a snack at the centre. If a snack is required children must sit in one place to eat the snack. This will reduce the amount of crumbs and juice spills on the floor and also the increase in ants at the centre. In addition if you see a mess or make a mess please feel free to get the mop, cloth or broom form the back room and do a quick tidy before you leave. We only have a cleaner on the weekend so it is important we all pitch in during the week.
Thanks- OPMT staff & Board
Memberships
Many families have memberships that become due for renewal in the Spring and Fall. This is just a reminder that in order to cover our costs we need our families to each contribute $45 a year. We are on a very tight budget with our major expenses being rent at $40,000 and total salaries at $40,000 so it is important that we have income form our members. If the $45 is difficult for your family then you can opt to pay it in installments. We will also waive it in extreme circumstances
Donations
Each year we must fundraise $100,000 to keep our doors open for the following year. At this point we only have two funders secured for next year- May Court and Trillium ($20,700)- and we have been turned down by two of our regular funders. The financial times are making it very difficult for many of our funders to meet the same obligations they have been able to in the past. We are hopeful that more commitments will come in over the next few months. We have not yet used the $26,000 we won last year from the Neighbourhoods - Royal LePage contest so we can use that whole amount to meet expenses this year, although it would be best to use a portion so we have some of it left for emergencies over the next few years. This leaves us with a deficit for the next school year of at least $34,000.
If you have family or friends who work for a company that have a donation fund could you please put in a good word for us. We would be happy to follow up with a complete package of information. We have a fantastic reputation with our funders for meeting the goals set and being fiscally responsible. We have a complete annual report that includes a full audit and we are a registered charity so are able to give tax receipts. Also, if you or your family have United Way funds taken off your salary you can easily have all or a portion of those funds directed to Oak Park Moms and Tots (U.W. still keeps 14%). Alternatively you can donate the money directly to us and we would be happy to issue a tax receipt
Clean Up
Please feel free to grab a mop, broom, or cloth from the back room if you see something that needs a quick tidy up. We can only afford a cleaner once a week and with several 100 people through the building each week we need everyone to pitch in where they can. Thanks!
